BEAVERTON — The Black Tornado 16-U ASA softball team settled with third place going 6-2 in the 64-team Valley Invitational College Exposure Tournament over the weekend.

Just after being bumped out of the running for the tournament crown, the Black Tornado secured bronze with a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Frost. Mackenzie Pons picked up her third win of the tournament in that contest and Taylor Schmidt closed it out, pitching a perfect final inning to get the save.

In the semifinals, the Oregon Silver Bullets of Beaverton prevailed 4-3 over the Black Tornado (20-4).

In pool play, the Black Tornado beat Vancouver Thunder 2-0, lost to Klamath Falls Extreme 2-1 and ended with a 16-1 victory over Vancouver Khaos.

In bracket play, the Black Tornado upended the Oregon City Nightmare 6-3, the Rainier Jets of Seattle, Wash. 2-0 and the Aloha Breeze 3-1.

Schmidt finished with a 3-2 record from the circle in the tournament, allowing just five earned runs to go with 31 strikeouts and a pair of saves. She also went 7-for-17 with three RBIs from the plate.

Nikki Jones went 11-for-23 and drove in four runs, Amanda Wolfe caught all eight games, went 8-for-22 and added three RBIs and two doubles.

Grants Pass High School stars Morgan Barnes and Tara Glover led the ARK to the tournament title.
