Arthur Harvey Bowen



A memorial to celebrate the life of Arthur "Art" Bowen will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2617 Barnett Road, Medford, Ore. Art died June 8, 2008, while visiting in Redding, Calif.



Memorial gifts may be made to Rogue Valley Dialysis Patient Trust Fund, 760 Golf View Drive, Medford, Ore. 97504.



Art was born June 14, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Arthur and Ruth Bowen. He graduated from Hughes High School and soon enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He became a fighter pilot, flying P-38, P-39, P-40 and P-47 with the 318th Fighter Group in the islands of the Pacific.



After WWII Art earned a BA degree from Arizona State College while continuing flying in the Air National Guard. He became active military again in 1950 and served his country proudly, flying jets in the U.S.A.F with tours of duty in Korea, Europe and Vietnam. He retired as a major in 1966 after 24 years service.



In retirement he earned a MA in political science from Los Angeles State College and did substitute teaching. He continued flying frequently and enjoyed his treasured Mooney airplane.



In 1989 Art and his wife Marty Mann came to their forever favorite home in Ashland. Art enjoyed bowling, golf, volunteering at the Plaza Information Booth and rooting for the Cincinnati Reds. He and Marty traveled, enjoyed their home and families and great times with good friends.



Through several years of health problems Art maintained his great smile and his positive attitude. He died a happy man.



Art will be greatly missed and remembered with love by his wife Marty; sister Jini and Jim Johnson of Oak Park Heights, Minn., his niece Cathy and Ted Spear of Minnetonka, Minn.; step children Laura Young of Huntington Beach, Calif., Mike and Toni Mann of Grants Pass, Ore., Dirk Mann of Joshua Tree, Calif., Kathy Mann of Yucca Valley, Calif., dear friends Art and Doris Lundahl of Ashland, Ore., and many nieces and nephews, grandkids and three great grandsons.
