Raft the Rogue in Shady Cove

Raft the Rogue in Shady Cove

River rafting can be just as dangerous as it is thrilling, so it's important to start slow and safe before tackling the vicious white water.

Over the past 20 years, Shady Cove, on the Upper Rogue River about 20 miles north of Medford, has become the center of family rafting fun.

The rapids here are rated between Class 1 and 3 on a 5-point scale, making them easier, but not necessarily easy.

Even the best swimmers should wear a life vest while rafting because the Rogue is an icy river with rapids that may appear gentle, but when you fall in, they aren't.

Depending on how high the river is, a float down from Lost Creek Dam, 10 miles north of town, can take between 2 and 4 hours.

Bring a lunch and some water spraying cannons to drench your buddies.

In rafting, it's the more the merrier, and novices should raft with experienced friends. If you must go alone, go later in the day when more eyes are on the river.

With a few common sense precautions you'll have a fun day in Oregon's great outdoors.
