Fire closes road near Happy Camp

Highway 96 in Northern California was closed at 5 p.m. Thursday after a fire burning near Happy Camp approached the highway that runs along the Klamath River.

A 4-mile stretch of the road, between mileposts 14 and 18, was closed, said Vern Farrell, Siskiyou Complex Fire information officer.

The fire was estimated at 4,000 acres Thursday morning, but it grew through the day in spite of efforts from 498 firefighters, Farrell said.

"We estimate the fire is 10 percent contained," Farrell said. "We had some areas that were contained, but other areas have spread."

Firefighters are supported by one helicopter, 15 engines and eight bulldozers, Farrell said. No estimate was available for when the highway would reopen.
