The Southern Oregon Riverdogs capitalized on the lighting problem at Harry & David Field to complete an amateur baseball doubleheader victory Friday against the visting Portland Cavaliers.

Southern Oregon won the seven-inning opener 9-5, then rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap that was called after five innings because of darkness.

In the opener, Josh Suarez belted a grand slam over the right field fence to complete a five-run outburst in the fifth inning to give the Riverdogs a 9-3 lead.

Consecutive RBI singles by Patrick Allen, Jared Adamson and Steve Candelaria keyed a four-run second inning for Southern Oregon (10-5).

Candelaria collected three hits and Adamson had two for the Riverdogs.

In Game 2, with two out and nobody on in the bottom of the fifth, Southern Oregon put together a five-run rally.

Portland pitcher Dylan Smith opened the door with walks to Adam Ehlers and Candelaria. Cody Curtin came in to relieve and hit Taylor Comford to load the bases. Caleb Tommasini provided an RBI single and Mitch Garcia followed with a two-run single. Tommasini scored on a wild pitch and after Shawn Freeman reached on an error, Brad Blocker's single drove in the final run.

American Legion A

SOUTH MEDFORD 5-7, GRANTS PASS MINERS 4-4 — Steven Lines came up with clutch hitting in both games for South Medford in the American Legion A Area 4 sweep at South Medford High.

With the score tied 3-3 in the fourth inning of the opener, Lines belted a run-scoring double and Bo Walker followed with an RBI single, which proved to be the winning hit.

Lines and Walker both had two hits, while Walker added three RBIs.

Colts' pitcher Isac Rolie improved to 3-0 with the complete-game victory.

In Game 2, South scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Sam McLaughlin singled to begin the rally, followed by walks to Ryan Kuykendall and Brandon Dollarhide. Lines stroked a two-run single and Walker followed with a sacrifice fly to score Dollarhide. Allen Fitzsimmons completed the barrage with an RBI double.

The Colts improved to 11-5 in league play and 12-6 overall, while Grants Pass fell to 7-6 in Area 4 action.

MEDFORD 5-3, KLAMATH FALLS 1-4 — At Klamath Falls, Logan Odom belted a three-run homer in the eighth inning to power the Medford Mustangs to the opening-game victory of the American Legion AAA Area 4 doubleheader at Kiger Stadium.

Jordan Lewis pitched a complete game for the Mustangs, allowing five hits and striking out 10.

Griff Boyd and Odom each collected a pair of hits for Medford in the opener.

In Game 2, Seth Brown's RBI single in the fourth inning proved to be the winning hit for the Falcons.

Aaron Bocchi had two hits for Klamath Falls, including a two-run double in the first inning.

Dustin Smith led Medford with three hits.
