Gladys Martindale Pierce



Gladys Martindale Pierce, 95, of Medford, Ore., passed away on July 18, 2008, at Providence Medical Center. She died of complications from a broken hip suffered while left alone outside her assisted living facility.



The viewing will be from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, 715 W. Main St., with a rosary at 6 p.m. (541-772-7111). Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23. Gladys will be laid to rest at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodland, Calif., next to her late husband, Thomas Everett Pierce.



Gladys was born on May 12, 1913, in Sacramento, Calif. She was raised in Sacramento and moved to Quincy, Calif., when she married Everett on June 5, 1937. With the start of WWII, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they lovingly raised two daughters and a son.



Gladys had an endearing zest for life and was active in the community, elected PTA president numerous times, served as a Girl Scout district and troop leader, was an AmericanCancerSociety volunteer driver, volunteered as a YMCA camp counselor, and was an accomplished bridge player. She enjoyed gardening, gourmet cooking, knitting, crocheting, reading and world travel.



Gladys is survived by her children, Kathie Kennedy Hamlin (Tom) of Medford, Ore., Patricia Anne Cornelissen (Dave) of Springfield, Va., and Thomas Pierce II (Deanna) of Novato, Calif. She is also survived by seven adoring grandchildren, Thomas B. Kennedy V, Kristin Kennedy, Sean Pierce, Nicole Pierce, and Kyle, Kerry-Anne and Patrick Cornelissen.



Fourteen years ago, Gladys lost the majority of her sight due to macular degeneration. As a result, she became an avid listener of books on tape. Therefore, memorial recognition may be made to Jackson County Library Outreach Program, 205 S. Central, Medford, Or, 97501
