Behind superb pitching, the North Medford Mavericks took care of Area 4 foe South Medford early on Monday.

Travis Cash threw a one-hitter in the opener and Mark Cokenour's three-hit performance followed as the Mavs dealt the Colts a pair of six-inning defeats, 12-1 and 16-2, in an American Legion A doubleheader at South Medford High School.

Cash allowed only a single to Isaac Rolie in the bottom of the third. Cash allowed one unearned run and finished with three strikeouts but walked five.

The Mavs' offense staked both Cash and Cokenour to six first-inning runs to start each contest.

In the opener, North got a two-run double from Brady Shipley and two-run singles from Cokenour and Corey Pine in the first.

Corey Haggans went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for the first-place Mavericks (35-10, 26-4 Area 4).

In Game 2, the Mavs had five singles in the first.

Cokenour recorded two strikeouts and walked four in five innings.

Stephen Cole kick-started the fifth inning with a solo home run and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs. Cody James was 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Shipley and Haggans each went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs.

The Colts' Max Britton hit a solo home run in the fifth.

American Legion

CENTRAL POINT 11-14, NORTH JACKSON 1-2 — At Central Point, Craig Kathol and Justen Morgan pitched a four-hitter and three-hitter, respectively, as Central Point swept the American Legion A Area 4 doubleheader at Anhorn Field.

The Comets are 17-20, 16-5 in Area 4.

In the opener, Kathol fanned two and walked one. The run he gave up was unearned.

CP's Bruce Sanford was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the third inning. Kenny Fahndrich and Brysen Winner each had two hits.

In Game 2, Morgan struck out five and walked two. Both runs off him were unearned.

Christian Massey was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Kos Ray was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. He had an RBI triple in the fourth.

Babe Ruth Baseball

AGE 13-14 STATE — At Portland, Central Point defeated Cascade 3-1 behind dominating pitching performances from Corey Wynant and Matt Cooper.

Wynant threw 52/3 innings and struck out three with one unearned run. Cooper earned the save and three of the four outs he got were strikeouts.

Ronny Herndon hit a two-run single for Central Point, which plays an elimination game Wednesday.

Little League Baseball

AGE 11-12 STATE — At Pendleton, Medford National Central routed Sheldon 12-0 in six innings to improve to 2-1 in pool play with one game remaining. Medford faces Corvallis on Wednesday.

Winning pitcher Brandon Lupton allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one in five innings.

Adrian Garcia was 4-for-4 with two solo homers and three RBIs. Jake Perry and Lupton each had three hits, Nate Walker was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and Joel Goin belted a three-run shot.
