The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is doing a sweep of the Bear Creek Greenway today, deploying deputies on foot and in a helicopter.

Sheriff Mike Winters said 14 deputies are working along the creekside trail today between Blackwell Road and Ashland. Deputies will walk and drive along the trail to look for illegal camping and other crimes or problems.

A helicopter patrolling the same stretch will help guide crews on the ground to hidden campsites and will keep an eye out for marijuana gardens, a few of which are spotted in the green belt each summer.

The sheriff's department has conducted safety sweeps of this sort along the greenway during each of the past several summers.

Details on what deputies find will be available later today, the sheriff said.
