Joe Garris

Joseph 'Joe' William Garris passed away on August 21, 2008 at the age of 86. He was born October 10, 1921, the first son of Vergie and William Garris in Pendleton, North Carolina. He grew up with two sisters and two brothers. Joe's boyhood years were spent in the Pendleton area working in agriculture with his father and brothers while attending school. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1939. Following graduation, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp until he joined the U.S. Army on September 16, 1942. He was stationed at Camp White, Ore., with the 80th General Hospital Division. While stationed there, he net Dorothy Jean Casad at the First Baptist Church of Medford. They were married on February 13, 1944 before Joe was shipped overseas to New Guinea where he served as a dental assistant specializing in dentures. After the war, Joe and Dorothy lived for a short time in Severn, N.C., but returned to Medford, Ore., in July of 1947. They lived in the Griffin Creek area and raised eight children in a home built by Joe's father-in-law. Joe was ahead of his time with many career changes and his legacy is his strong work ethic. He worked in the fruit harvest for Harry & David, the heating fuel business for Medford Fuel Company and in construction under his father-in-law on COPCO power projects at Prospect and Toketee Falls. He also worked for Medford Tire Company and as an independent milk carrier for Gilman Dairy. His final move was to the Medford Coporation where he worked until his retirement in 1984. Joe was energetic and always worked hard to provide for his growing family. He is also remembered as being really good at growing a garden. Joe became a Christian in 1952 and served at the First Baptist Church in many different capacities for more than 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Winston, Oregon; children Margaret 'Maggie' Bailey and her husband Jim of Wenatchee, Wash; Phyllis Griffin and her husband Ken of LaCenter, Wash; Susan Smithhisler and her husband Ron of Roseburg, Ore; Stanley Garris and his wife Nanci of Eagle Point, Ore; Mathhew Garris of White City, Ore; Phillip Garris and his wife Debbi of Winston, Ore; Ruth Botens and her husband Mike also of Winston, Ore; Rose Lucas and her husband Gary of Medford Ore. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth of St. Augustine, Fla. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 11:00 am at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston, Ore.
