William Frederick (Bill) Richardson

William Frederick (Bill) Richardson, 85, passed away Friday, August 15, 2008, at his home in Medford, Ore., surrounded by his wife and some family, under the care of Asante Hospice.

Bill was born March 17, 1923, in Toronto, Canada, to Frederick Thomas and Margaret Louise Richardson. Left to raise Bill and his sisters alone, Margaret moved the family to Saskatchewan while Bill was very young. His upbringing in "the Wild West" helped form a man self-reliant, dependable, and up to any challenge. Upon graduating high school, Bill moved back to Toronto, where he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and received training as an aircraft mechanic. He served in World War II in Yorkshire, England, maintaining Lancaster bombers until the end of the war.

When he returned home, he married Jean Sunny, and the two eventually moved to the U.S., becoming United States Citizens in 1961. Bill settled in for a career in quality control at Western Gold & Platinum of Belmont, Calif., which, in time, became part of the Verizon family.

After the passing of Jean, Bill married Mary Mitchell Sexton, a brave feat, going from having no children of his own, to becoming stepfather to seven children in one marriage ceremony on August 3, 1973. He was an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather for the next 35 years! Upon his retirement from WESGO in 1985, he and Mary left the San Francisco Bay Area, moving to Hemet, Calif., for four years, before settling for good in Medford, Ore., in 1989. Among his MANY interests and hobbies, Bill enjoyed rockhounding, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading, travelling, computers, and volunteering. Participation in these areas led to membership in the Sequoia Gem & Mineral Society of Redwood City, Calif., the Royal Canadian Legion, Good Sam RV Club of Hemet, Calif., Asante Friendship Club, Loaves & Fishes, Senior Aces Computer Group, and Rogue Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) including the Medford Airport Information Desk, Asante LifeLine Installation Team, and Rogue Valley Medical Center Senior Auxilliary.

Surviving Bill are his wife, Mary, of Medford, Ore.; stepchildren Jim Sexton (Anne), of Eugene, Ore; Bill Sexton (Waverly), of San Carlos, Calif; John Sexton (Helen), of Napa, Calif; Rita Sexton (Mike DiGino), of South Lake Tahoe, Calif; Teri Morton (Jim), of San Jose, Calif; Annette Ingersoll (Bob), of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Bob Sexton, of Phoenix, Ore. and the 15 loving grandchildren who will miss their 'Pops.' Also sad to see Bill gone are his nieces and nephews, Elaine Miller of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; Jim Hawkey of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; Margo Shanklin of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Andrew Robertson, of Denver, Colo. and Bill's cousin, Ed Spears, of Sidney, British Columbia, Canada - and countless friends and associates.

There will be a celebration of Bill's life officiated by Asante Hospice chaplain, John Braund, at Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall, 10th & S. Oakdale Ave, Medford Ore., on Saturday, September 6th, at — p.m.
