Theodora "Teddy" Mata

Teddy Mata, 80, died on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, surrounded by her devoted children and their spouses, and other family members. She was born to Katherine and George Dennis in March of 1928 in California. She married the late Ramon Mata in 1945, and they made their home first in the city of Phoenix, Ore., and then on their country farm on Pacific Ave.

In her teen years, Teddy worked in the restaurant business. She also was a well-known face to Rogue Valley Country Club members, who affectionately called her "Teddy", and she served them well as a waitress for over 47 years, retiring at the age of 70.

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving as president of the Altar Society, member a of the Catholic Daughters, and the Legion of Mary, and a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a longtime member of Medford Seniors.

Teddy loved doing crafts and working with her hands. She started her own floral business called Teddy's Flowers. Using her passion for floral arranging, she created many beautiful designs for holidays, fund-raisers, and weddings. She also was a long-term volunteer for Ballet in the Park in Ashland, Ore.

She is survived by her brother, James Dennis, of Rogue River, Ore.; and three children, Teresa Hauck, of Livermore, Calif., Ramon Mata, of Happy Valley, Ore., and Virginia Oxendine, of Medford, Ore. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a donation be made to Magdalene Home, 12 Black Oak Dr., Medford, Ore., 97504, a residence for homeless and pregnant teens.

A rosary and scripture reflection will take place at Perl Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at 8:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a reception following the service. Interment will follow the reception at 11:30 a.m. at Siskiyou Memorial Gardens.
