Harold Thomas Mattern



Harold Thomas Mattern was born in Burwell, Nebr. on October 11, 1914 to Ralph Horace Mattern and Cleve Alice (Thomas) Mattern. He was the fourth of six children. On September 19, 2008 at 4:40 a.m. Harold passed away at Providence Hospital. He was 93 years old. He was stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas before being shipped off to Europe during World War II in the 174th Field Artillery Battalion as a linesman. He earned the rank of corporal in the Army.



After the war, he met and later married Donna Gayle Skudler on December 10, 1947 and was married for 48 years. From 1947 until 1958 he worked at various jobs in the Burwell area including the alfalfa mill and Kirby Ranch. Harold moved his family from Burwell in 1958 and settled in Eagle Point, Ore. In 1958 he began working for Olson-Ross Lumber, then for Olson and Lawyer, Lawyer and Veneer and finally for Boise Cascade where he retired in 1979. On July 1, 1972 he and his family moved from Eagle Point to their new home where they would finally settle in Central Point, Ore. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, and gambling. Harold is survived by his three sons, Russell Harold Mattern, of Medford, Gale Lee Mattern, of Central Point, and Roy Thomas Mattern, of Central Point; and two special friends, Justin, of Medford, and Raymond, of Central Point. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna Gayle Mattern; his son, Robin Dean Mattern, of Central Point; his sister, Elsie Conner, of Burwell, Nebr.; and his four brothers, Vernon Mattern of Paonia, Colo., Floyd Mattern, of Grants Pass, Donald Mattern, of Ainsworth, Nebr. and Eldon Mattern, of Central Point.



A viewing will be held from 1-4 Wednesday Sept 24th at Conger Morris Central Point Chapel. On Thursday Sept 25th at 1:00 p.m., a service will be held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
