Vernon Ralph Carse

Vernon Ralph Carse, 89, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.

Vern was born May 4, 1919, in Peardale, a rural area of Grass Valley, Calif. He grew up in Oroville, Calif. He was in the U.S. Army from February 1941 to Sept. 25, 1945, and most of that time was served in Alaska. He recieved one Bronze Star medal and one Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal on Oct. 29, 1943. He also received the American Defense Service Good Conduct medal in 1944.

In 1945, Vern returned to Oroville and established a wholesale nursery in partnership with his father. They specialized in citrus trees and deciduous trees and shrubs. In 1948, he met his soul mate, Barbara Sirjesse. They were married on June 19, 1949, and moved to Sacramento Calif., in 1958. He continued to work in the nursery industry and was assistant manager of Capitol Nursery in Sacramento when he retired in 1978.

He and Barbara moved to Central Point in 1985. They were charter members of the Medford Growers & Crafters Market, which Vern supported for many years. He raised and sold bedding plants, herbs, and garlic at both the Medford and the Grants Pass outdoor markets until he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2001, and bladder cancer in 2002.

Vern was a loving, gentle Christian man. He liked to use his talents to serve the Lord. In addition to gardening, his hobby was oil painting. He painted a large baptistry mural for Tyler Street Church in Sacramento, Calif., before moving to Oregon. He also helped with a landscaping maintenance at both Tyler Street Church, and then at Hope Christian Church in Central Point, Ore.

Vern passed in peace at his home in Central Point. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, to whom he was married for 59 1/2 years. They had no children.

A memorial Service will be held at Hope Christian Church. 325 Oak St., Central Point, Ore., on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at 2 p.m. A potluck reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Christian Church or to Providence Hospice.
