LEXINGTON, Ky. — A day after winning the ITA Southeast Regional doubles title with teammate Jamie Hunt, Georgia junior Nate Schnugg, from Medford, claimed the singles title with two more wins Monday at the UK Boone Tennis Center.

Schnugg, ranked 12th, took down third-ranked and No. 1 seed Daniel Vallverdu of Miami, 6-2,4-6, 6-3 in a rematch of last year's semifinals. Vallverdu was the defending champion. Schnugg then topped No. 3 seed and 19th-ranked Bruno Agostinelli of Kentucky, 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4 in the finals.

"Both matches were big battles," Schnugg said. "I had to fight to get every point. This was the best tennis I've played all year, and to play well in this type of match gives me a lot of confidence."

Schnugg led 5-4 in the second set of the final match, but Agostinelli rallied to force a third set, only to see Schnugg respond by winning his sixth match in four days, all in three sets.

"Nate just had another great day," coach Manny Diaz said. "He has done us proud. He was challenged in both matches and was very tired, but he mustered up enough courage and did a great job of earning the win."

Schnugg is the first Bulldog to win both the regional singles and doubles title since Matias Boeker in 2000.

While Hunt and Schnugg will play in the National Indoor Tournament, the rest of the team returns to action at the Bulldog Scramble Nov. 7-9 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
