Allen Wayne Rettmann

Allen, of Central Point, passed away Oct. 19, 2008, after a long courageous battle with brain cancer. A memorial service is Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at — p.m. at Community Bible Church, C.P., officiating: Pastor Pete Slusher.

Born in Winthrop, Ark., to Henry Lee and Velva (Bush) Rettmann, Jan. 28, 1931, they moved several times, settling in Ashland, Sept. 1946. He graduated from Ashland Senior High in 1949, and enjoyed being a "49er," and the monthly lunches, along with the yearly alumni events. After graduating, he worked at Daly's Pine Mountain Lumber Co., a steam mill near Howard Prairie, and White Fir Mill.

Prior to entering

the Army in the Korean War, he married Patricia Dean on Nov. 3, 1952 and they had 2 children, Michael and Debra. They divorced in 1987. Allen became a fourth generation carpenter, joining the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1961. He helped build the original phase of R.V. Memorial Hospital, and helped build the first major apartment complex in Medford. His last job before becoming a union official was with Medford Corp. Elected Financial Secretary Business Rep. for Carpenters Local 2067 Medford in June 1963, he started an apprenticeship training program, and served until retiring Jan. 1993. He served 24 years as trustee to Ore-Wash Carpenters-Employers Trust Funds, driving from Medford to Portland regularly.

Allen married the love of his life, Donna Searles, on May 4, 1991, and built a life of happiness, dreams come true and a yard to be admired. As his best "fishing buddy," they loved to be on the Rogue fishing for salmon, or Howard Prairie catching fat trout that Donna expertly smoked. In his retirement, he enjoyed floating the lower Rogue, hunting, golfing with beloved brother, Charlie, and good friend, Dennis. He served as Marshall for E.P. Golf Course, making cribbage boards in the shape of the number 29, where there is one to remember him by. He was a very generous man to all needing a helping hand; times of building, repairing, encouraging, guiding, or anything in between were too many to count.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roy Lee, he is survived by his wife, Donna; stepdaughter, Denise (Tracy) Gunther; son, Michael (Debbie); daughter, Debbie (Ross) Wilchek; sister, Elaine (Ray) Hoadley; brother, Charles (Jody); cousins; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews. Those wishing to make contributions, please make them in Allen's name to the American Cancer Society or Providence Hospice Care.
