Sometimes music calls no matter what the plan, or so guitarist Matt Brown of the band Ruby Hill learned.

"I was pursuing a degree in business finance at Seattle University," Brown says. "Then one summer I started a band. After I graduated, I put my degree aside and began to pursue music."

Brown, along with guitarist Jordan Clark, bassist Jacob Battan and drummer Frank Lubas, formed Ruby Hill and began performing at venues around the Portland area, including the Ash Street Saloon and Berbagis in downtown Portland and McMenamins Boon's Treasury in Salem.

"We've had some good crowds at those shows, and we want to spread out to other markets," Brown says.

Ruby Hill will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at 4 Daughters Irish Pub, 126 W. Main St., Medford.

"Ruby Hill has a sound that is like bits and pieces of everything we listened to while growing up," Brown says. "We like soul, blues and rock, and artists like Jeff Buckley, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix are among our key influences."
