Marvelle Louise Lawrence

Marvie passed away peacefully Oct. 20, 2008, having filled her life with love from family, friends, church and song. She was born June 6, 1926, to devoted parents Rexford and Louise McGill. She was a fourth generation Californian and helped, with her brother, Clayton McGill, on the family citrus farm in Tustin, Calif. From childhood, she was blessed with a big, beautiful soprano voice that brought joy to anyone who heard it. She graduated from the University of Southern California in Voice and Sociology. She moved to Oregon, in 1968, with her husband, Glenn Lawrence, and children to a ranch on Yale Creek, L Rancho Alegre. They ran it as a youth summer camp and working cattle ranch until 1974 when it was sold and Marvie moved to Medford. Marvie had a passion for helping people, especially youth. She went on to be a church youth leader, YMCA Program Director and ultimately worked many satisfying years for Children Services of Jackson County. Marvie was a wise counsel and strong advocate for both young and old and thus touched many lives. She was a dedicated member for 37 years, of the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, and served in many capacities on the church Board of Directors. She drew profound comfort and satisfaction from her work in the church's Woman's Fellowship and deeply cherished the friendship and community they shared in work and worship. She was a longtime church choir member. Her other great musical passion was the Rogue Valley Chorale, and was a charter member of the group in 1973; she loved to sing with her friends. In 1985, she served as President of the Chorale Board of Directors. Marvie deeply appreciated the quality of music, direction and purity of song she found in the Chorale.

Marvie's greatest love was her family and she was mother extraordinaire. She will be deeply missed by her children and their families, Dr. Michael Lawrence (Bellingham, WA), Kristi Lawrence Lupoli (Santa Barbara, CA), Steve and Susan Lawrence (Ashland), Dr. Matthew Lawrence and Dr Ann Swartz (Medford) and her grandchildren, Andy and Tony Lawrence, Cole and Bryce Lupoli, Austin Lawrence, Jason and Shalana Lawrence. A memorial celebration of her life and song will be held on November 8th, 2008, at the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, Medford at — pm with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to the Rogue Valley Chorale, 23 South Central, Medford, Or 97501 or to the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, Marvelle Lawrence Handicapped Access Building Fund, 1801 East Jackson Street, Medford, 97504.
