Emma "Emmy" Wyss

Emmy passed away Oct. 14, 2008, in San Mateo, Calif., after a short battle with cancer. Emmy was born in Herisau, Switzerland, on Feb. 25, 1921. After graduating from Nurses Training in Switzerland she spontaneously immigrated to the United States. Settling in Tillamook, Ore., she began work at the Tillamook General Hospital where she soon met her husband, Fritz "Fred" Wyss. Shortly afterwards, Fred and Emmy relocated to Grants Pass, Ore., where they bought a dairy farm and raised their three children. In 1972, Emmy and Fred moved to Central Point, Ore., where she spent the next 34 years before relocating to San Mateo to be closer to family.

Emmy loved and accepted people into her family, so much that she became known as Grandma or Mom to those closest to her. She spent her life volunteering and giving back to communities where she lived, including working at an orphanage in Switzerland, returning to her nursing career in her late '50s, volunteering at the Senior Center, and giving 16 years of service to the Central Point Food Bank. She also enjoyed working in her garden, knitting, caring for her cats, and catching up with friends and family.

Surviving are her sons: Alfred "Walter", and partner, Wayne Mainus, of Santa Fe, and Paul, and wife, Karen, of Belmont, Calif.; grandchildren, Nikki Hydes, Jason Caldwell, Melissa Caldwell and Allyson Wyss; and great-grandson, Grant Hydes. She was preceded by her husband, Fred Wyss; and daughter, Erica Caldwell.

The burial service will be at the Oddfellow Cemetery at 7800 Trask River Road in Tillamook, Ore., at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27, 2008, followed by a reception at the Swiss Hall. There will also be an open memorial service at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 745 N. 10th St., in Central Point, OR 97502., on Oct. 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to The Humane Society of the United States at HSUS, Dept.
