COOS BAY — A Southern Oregon man is charged with manslaughter in a hunting fatality over the weekend.

Police said 41-year-old Kelly Johnson claims he was aiming at a deer when 20-year-old Cody Armstrong was shot in the head Sunday just before noon in the Siskiyou National Forest about 16 miles from the small town of Powers.

Armstrong, Johnson and a third person were hunting together near the area known as the McCurdy Seed Orchard when the shooting happened, Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frazier said in a news release. Investigators said that Johnson apparently shot at a sound he thought was a deer and that shot hit Armstrong.

Both men are from Powers, where the school district Superintendent Matt Shorb said the death was like a family loss.

Shorb coached Armstrong in high school basketball and remembered him for his sense of humor and his ability to make others laugh.
