Wilma Smith Dames

Wilma passed away on Oct. 25, 2008. She was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Duluth, Minn., where she was raised. She and husband, Robert, who preceded her in death, and their three sons moved to Medford in 1949, from Jamestown, N.D. She attended St. Scholastica College, Macalester College and Southern Oregon University, from which she graduated. After raising her family, she taught reading for dyslexic students for several years at McLoughlin Junior High School.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and was active in the Altar Guild and Pastoral Care, as well as the Daughters of the King. She was a member of Chapter AA PEO, Daughters of the Nile, Medford Lady Lions, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She served on the Jackson County Library Board, was a PTA volunteer and a Cub Scout den mother. In the 1950s, she volunteered her home for public polling.

Her sister, Eleanor Christopher, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons and their families, William and Ursula Dames, of Medford, Robert and Virginia Dames, of Lake Oswego, and George and Leslie Dames, of Bend; grandchildren, Eric Dames, Julie Ryan, Bumper Dames, Amy Dames Smith, Phillip Dames, David Dames and Matthew Dames; great-grandchildren, Riley Smith and Finnegan Ryan.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, from — p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, corner of 5th and Oakdale, Medford, Ore.
