The Phoenix boys socccer season came to abrupt end in the second round of the state playoffs, but the co-Skyline champion Pirates were rewarded with five first-team all-conference selections.

Phoenix players named to the top unit were sophomore forward Jose Macias, junior sweeper Geoff Jensen, junior midfielder Carlos Mena, junior forward Chris Solis and senior goalkeeper Gresham Prehn.

The dynamic Macias was the Pirates leading scorer and Solis was second on the squad finding the net. Macias tallied 15 goals to go with 13 assists, while Solis contributed 12 goals and seven assists.

"(Macias) is one of the most exciting soccer players I've coached in a long time," said Phoenix veteran coach Dennis Flenner. "When you put him on the field you know something is going to happen. He is one of most skilled kids handling the ball. He takes people out of their comfort zone."

Team captains Jensen and Mena were a big reason why the Pirates allowed just 10 goals all season.

"They were both a big part of the game structure," said Flenner. "They were the backbone of keeping us organzied and directing the offense."

Prehn, a two-year starter, registered eight shutouts for the 13-3 Pirates.

"(Prehn) is really athletic and a strong player," said Flenner. "Above all else is his mature, positive attitude."

Co-conference champion Henley took home player of the year, senior midfielder Matt Kelly, and coach of the year, Lupe Gonzales.
