A Medford man died on a downtown corner early this morning when he drove his speeding car into a pole, shearing the car in half, police say.

Officers found James Robert Kinler, 27, of the 600 block of Dakota Avenue, dead at the scene of the 2:09 a.m. accident near the corner of Fourth and Orange streets, they said in a press release.

Police say they saw a speeding, reckless car traveling west on Fourth Street from Riverside Avenue. An officer attempted to stop the car after the driver went through a red traffic light, but it sped away.

Police lost track of the car on Fourth Street and moments later found the crash, they say.

Kinler was alone in the car.

An investigation by the county sheriff's office and Medford police is continuing.
