After being contacted by family members, police have identified a man who died Tuesday night when he was struck while walking along Highway 62.

Timothy Jay Frizzell, 61, a transient whose last known address was in Vancouver, Wash., was struck by a car driven by Kathy Lynn Schaecher, 51, of Central Point, as he walked into the eastbound lanes of the highway near Vilas Road, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Fitzgerald. The road was dark and foggy in spots at the time, Fitzgerald said.

Investigators were unable to find Frizzell's family and sought the public's help. After hearing the plea, relatives living on the central Oregon coast and in the Portland area contacted police.

The crash slowed traffic in the area for several hours as OSP accident reconstruction teams investigated the scene.

Emergency officials at the scene warned anyone walking near a busy highway at night to wear bright clothes to alert drivers of their presence.

An investigation into the accident is continuing, OSP officials said.
