MERLIN — With just over one minute remaining, Skyline Conference champion North Valley held a slim lead over Estacada in the Class 4A state football quarterfinals Friday at Knights Field.

But Mitch Clark's 39-yard field goal lifted the Rangers into the state semifinals with a hard-fought 15-13 victory over the third-ranked Knights.

Estacada (10-2) started the winning drive at its own 44 after a pass interception with 5:34 left in the game. The Ranger march stalled at the North Valley 24, but Clark booted the winning kick with 1:08 left.

"It barely made it," said North Valley coach Todd Willaman of the final field goal. "It just squeaked over."

The Knights (9-2) had one last chance. After returning the kickoff to its 46, North Valley advanced to the Rangers' 29-yard line. But on a first-down pass to his brother Dane on a sideline route, quarterback Ryan Anderson was intercepted by Matt Sullivan with 34 seconds remaining.

"It's really disappointing," said Willaman. "I really thought we were going to win at the end."

North Valley took a 7-6 lead on Dane Dellsite's 2-yard touchdown run with 4:15 left in the opening quarter and never trailed until Clark's field goal.

A Ryan Anderson 21-yard TD pass to Nick Dechenne gave the Knights a 13-6 lead over the eighth-ranked Rangers midway through the third quarter.

Alex Pursel's second short touchdown run pulled the Capital Conference champions to within 13-12 near the end of the third period.

Pursel led the Rangers' running attack with 167 yards on 41 carries. Jake Hyde tacked on 101 yards on 22 rushes. Estacada amassed 275 of its 333 total yards on the ground.

Junior Ryan Anderson sparked the Knights' offense by completing 8 of 17 passes for 177 yards, but North Valley's ground game managed just 44 yards.

"We moved the ball down at the end but came up just a little short," said Willaman. "Ryan Anderson made some great plays to get us there. He's a heckuva player."

Estacada moves into the semifinals against Banks, a 24-21 winner over Marist.

LAKE OSWEGO 34, SHELDON 13 — At Lake Oswego, the top-ranked Lake Oswego Lakers reeled off 34 unanswered points after Sheldon's quick start to oust the defending state champion Irish from Class 6A state playoff contention in the quarterfinals.

Quarterback Jordan Johnson barrelled into the end zone from 4 yards out and heaved a 57-yard TD to Gavin Hyde in the second quarter to put the Irish ahead, 13-0.

Then quarterback Jack Lomax generated some much-needed offense for the Lakers.

Lomax, who was mistake-free, completing 18 of 26 for 258 yards, put the Lakers on the board with a 28-yard TD toss to Brad Halberg and later broke a 13-all tie with a 34 pass to Will Storey.

Two Whit Bissett touchdown runs put the contest out of reach.

Johnson was 13-for-20 for 135 yards and rushed for 57 yards on 18 carries.

The Lakers will face Jesuit in the semifinals next week at PGE Park in Portland.
