A 53-year-old Cave Junction man died Sunday night when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Highway 199 south of Cave Junction.

A 53-year-old Cave Junction man died Sunday night when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Highway 199 south of Cave Junction.

William Warren Bailey was riding his bike north in the southbound lane on Highway 199 near its intersection with Rockydale Road at about 7:15 p.m. when he was struck, Oregon State Police reported Monday morning. The area is unlit and fog was starting to develop at the time of the crash, police said.

A southbound 1992 Mercury Sable driven by Joseph Edward Erickson, 42, of Portland, hit Bailey.

Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they didn't know if he was wearing a helmet. Erickson was using safety restraints and was not injured.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation. The Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Transportation and Illinois Valley Fire Department assisted at the scene.
