JACKSON/JOSEPHINE - Muzzleloaders and bowhunters are working lower elevation areas now looking for a big buck in rut. Acorns are the staple now, so look for bucks chasing does around oak patches. Don't forget those antlers for rattling. It's a perfect late-season tactic.

Local duck and goose hunting is improving with the weather. Most of the Denman Wildlife Area fields now are flooded or almost flooded, and they are drawing in birds.

Geese are thick along the Rogue River corridor, as well as in open grain fields. Be cognizant of riverside residents and other boaters when shooting geese from driftboats.

Most fields are private land, and hunters need to seek permission.

Fall turkey hunting has been fair, with most of the birds concentrated on private lands around oak flats. Ambush techniques are best; the toms are pretty silent now.

Bear hunters are reminded that the thawed heads of hunter-killed bears must be checked in at a local Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife office for a tooth extraction as part of a bear study.

DOUGLAS - The Umpqua National Forest has reopened forest land and roads closed by the Rattle Fire.

Bowhunters should focus on lower-elevation lands near oak savannahs.

COOS - Waterfowl are concentrated on mud flats, and hunting for them has been very good throughout Coos Bay and around Charleston.

KLAMATH - Waterfowl hunting on Upper Klamath Lake has been good for those who have boats.

Duck hunting should be good until colder weather pushes many birds south to wintering areas.

The last chukar releases on the Lower Klamath Hills 10 miles south of Klamath Falls occurred two weeks ago.

LAKE - Forest grouse hunting is open through Sunday. The best areas for blue and ruffed grouse are in the Winema National Forest.

Blue grouse can be found along ridge tops in more open forest habitat. The county has only a sparse ruffed grouse population. The birds that are here generally are found along riparian areas

SUMMER LAKE - Success is down about a third from last year. All waterfowl, coot and snipe seasons will be closed Monday and Tuesday, reopening Wednesday.
