Howard Arthur Tolliver

Howard was received into God's loving arms on Nov. 21, 2008, with the love of his family surrounding him. He was born in Tyler, Minn., on May 12, 1917, to Helen Schentzal and Arthur Tolliver, and raised by his maternal grandparents on the family farm. As a teen he worked in the CCC camps and sent his pay home to care for his brother, Gene, and sister, Mady.

In 1939, in Los Angeles, he met and married Nellie Davis, the love of his life for 55 years. They raised their children, Howard, Lawrence and Sandra in Ashland after moving here in 1948. Howard owned and operated Tolliver Sheet Metal Works for 35 years and was well respected for his honest and hard work. He lived by the philosophy that "you are only as good as your word." Nellie passed away in 1993. The following year, he married Lillian Proctor, a high school sweetheart. He was widowed in 2007.

Family was most important to Howard and he was always there for them. He is survived by his brother, Gene; daughter, Sandra, and her husband, Lee; grandchildren, Machelle, Melony, Marcus, Lori, Tim, Troy and Karen; 17 great-grandchildren, Steffany, Elizabeth, Melissa, Fredrick, Nicholas, Jessica, Tyler, Loren, Shawnell, Porche, Daniel, Lucas, Lukas, Noah, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Nicholas; and great-great-grandchildren, Faith, Chloe, Brendan, Jennica, George and Abigail.

60 years ago he helped found Grace Lutheran Church, now located on Francis Lane. A memorial service will be held there on Dec. 1, 2008, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tim Cartright officiating.

...and I'll treasure the ship he sailed

knowing none of us in this family have failed

he taught us all to find our special place

one that would leave us winning the race

and as I held his hand that last day

he said goodbye in his own special way.
