Dorothy Margaret Johnson

Dorothy Margaret Johnson (Schneller), 83, passed away Nov. 21, 2008, in Bend, Ore. Her loving family was close by her side throughout her final days. Born on March 21, 1925, in Calumet, Mich., she was the youngest daughter of seven children to Peter and Emma (Etu) Schneller. A graduate of Calumet High, Dorothy went to nursing school in Detroit, Mich., in 1942, when she was 17 years old. In 1946, she went out with her sister on a double date to a speakeasy and met the love of her life, Russell Arthur Johnson, of Duluth, Minn., a decorated World War II Navy pilot. They were married on Sept. 16, 1946, and their union lasted 62 years. She worked as a Registered Nurse in obstetrics until her first child was born in 1947. In 1956, they took their growing family to Medford, Ore., where they lived until their retirement in 1984, where they moved to the Bend/Redmond area. She raised seven children, and worked as an RN at Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital. She was known for her sense of humor and infectious laughter. She loved music, dancing, cooking, and growing fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed air shows, traveling in the motor home, hunting deer and elk, and fishing for salmon. She is survived by her husband, Russell; and all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Eugenia (Gina) McGrail, of Phoenix, Ariz., in 1994; brother, John (Jack), in 1990; sister, Helen Foley, of Rogers, Ark.; and other sisters, Lucille and Geri. Her other sibling is Robert Schneller, who retired to Calumet. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at — p.m. at the Redmond Memorial Chapel, 717 SW 6th Street, Redmond, OR. Burial services will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at — p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
