Laverne M. Botsford Barnes



Laverne Barnes passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Providence Hospital, surrounded by family and a special friend, Allison.



Laverne was born Aug. 1, 1911, in Lake Benton, Minn., to Martin and Christine Black. As a young girl, she rode a horse several miles a day to attend school in Lake Benton. When she was old enough to crank the old Model T Ford, her father allowed her to drive it to school. She graduated from high school in 1929. On Feb. 19, 1931, in Tyler, Minn., she married George Botsford, who preceded her in death on June 11, 1967. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946 and during the 1950s, owned and operated a small store, garage and gas station in Sams Valley. In the late '60s she went to work for the Jackson County Assessor's Office until her retirement in 1976. In November 1971, she married Harlan Barnes, who preceded her in death in June, 1995.



She loved to play the organ and belonged to an organ club comprised of senior citizens who enjoyed getting together to share their music.



Laverne is survived by her son, Cleon (Marie) Botsford, of Gold Hill, Ore.; three grandchildren, Sherry (Richard) Verstrate, Deborah (Mark) Hueners, and Ronald (Dolores) Botsford; great-grandson, Gregory (Stacey) Denton; and great-great-granddaughters, Ashley, Chelsie, and Hannah.

Laverne was also preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Clarence Black.



At her request there will be no service. A potluck for family and friends will be held at a later date to celebrate her life.
