ASHLAND — Kelsey McKinnis had to assume more responsibility with Ashland point guard Allison Gida sidelined by an injured ankle against Mazama Friday in Southern Sky Conference girls basketball.

McKinnis received good support from senior posts Brenna Heater and Natalie DelCarlo as the Grizzlies (10-6, 4-0 SSC) prevailed over the stubborn Vikings, 55-36.

McKinnis finished with 11 points and four assists but, more importantly, the senior guard effectively ran the Grizzlies' offense in the absence of Gida, who reinjured her ankle in practice this week. Gida will be out for today's game against Eagle Point and her status for Tuesday's key matchup against Crater is uncertain.

"When you play without Gida it changes everything," said Ashland coach Tom McCracken. "It was good to see Kelsey able to handle the point. She did a great job of taking care of the basketball."

Heater, playing in only her second game since returning from offseason ankle surgery, scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
