EUGENE — Trailing by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, second-ranked South Medford put its faith in E.J. Singler, and the senior held up his end save for one final effort that allowed South Eugene to eke out a 57-55 triumph on Friday.

Despite picking up his fourth foul with 4:08 to go in the third quarter, Singler did what he could to remain in the game and almost single-handedly led the Panthers to the Southwest Conference victory. The 6-foot-6 senior scored 16 of his team's 21 points in the fourth quarter, and had 26 overall.

"He carried us, he really did," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy. "He played very well."

South Eugene (8-7, 4-2 SWC) fended off Singler and the Panthers (10-5, 3-3) by draining 7 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes. Singler's shot in the waning seconds was blocked out of bounds by Spencer Coleman, and the Axemen picked off the ensuing inbounds effort to seal a second win over the Panthers.

Cy Dellenback-Ouellette made his return after injuring his ankle in the season opener and had nine points.

Hayden Rooke-Ley's 20 points led the Axemen, while 11 of Coleman's 19 points came after Singler picked up his fourth foul.
