CHILOQUIN — St. Mary's used a strong defensive effort to stay unbeaten in Southern Cascade League girls basketball.

The fifth-ranked Crusaders gradually extended a four-point halftime lead into a 55-45 victory over Chiloquin Saturday.

"The girls came together in the second half," said assistant coach David Alexander. "We got in the passing lanes and put pressure on their guards. We got a few steals and some easy layups."

St. Mary's (11-4, 5-0 SCL) received key contributions from sisters Domonique and Veronica Valdez. Domonique Valdez, a sophomore point guard, had four steals and four assists to go with six points, while junior Veronica Valdez paced the Crusaders offensively with 14 points.

"Domonique Valdez played a well-rounded game," said Alexander. "She played well on defense and got us into our offensive flow."

The Crusaders got a boost off the bench from junior Aubrie Street, who scored six first-quarter points and finished with 12 on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

"We were a little flat to start the game," said Alexander. "(Street) came in and hit those shots and got us going. She found the gaps in their zone and we were able to get her the ball."

Katie Bates had seven assists and five rebounds and Kelsey Gross pulled down seven rebounds for St. Mary's.

"We're a really good defensive team," said Alexander. "We're quick and get steals and capitalize on it."
