Karen Celene Reid

Karen Reid passed away Jan. 23, 2009, at Rogue Valley Medical Center, with her daughters Erin and Megan at her side. The lives of many will forever be changed by her loss, as they were by her life.

Karen was born Sept. 6, 1948, in Ashland, Ore., to Gerald "Jack" and Phyllis Newton. She was preceded in birth by her sister Cheryl, who remained her best friend for Karen's entire life. Her youth was spent in Ashland, including her college years where she earned a bachelor's degree in education at Southern Oregon University, during which time she met and married John Noble Reid, Jr. on Sept. 19, 1970. She gave birth to John, III, on Feb. 1, 1972. After the birth of her son, Karen began to teach at numerous elementary schools in Southern Oregon. At one point, John and Karen moved to Klamath Falls where Karen continued to teach. In 1977 they returned to the Rogue Valley and settled in Medford. Karen gave birth to their daughter, Erin on Nov. 16, 1981. For a time, Karen chose to stay home as a wife and mother. Shortly after making the decision to return to teaching, everyone was surprised to learn that Karen, at the age of 39, was pregnant with their third child. She gave birth to Megan on March 10, 1988. Due to her prolonged absence from teaching, she chose to enter a new career path and went to work at Meier and Frank (Macy's) in 1990. She continued to work there, happily and amongst many friends, up until shortly before the time of her death.

To all who knew her, Karen was a devoted friend, who loved to laugh and tell stories. Her greatest joy and accomplishment in life was being a mother and grandmother, as she was to so many besides her own children. She never hesitated to help those in need; whether it be loaning a co-worker money, or buying a coat and shoes for a child she didn't know. Karen loved to shop - from morning to night, on her lunch, on her breaks, or any spare moment she could find. The funny thing is, her purchases were almost never for her own benefit. When her two daughters were lucky enough to go on a shopping expedition with their mother, the three were always accused of having too much fun by those who could hear the laughter as they entered the store. Even luckier was when her beloved granddaughter, Montana, could tag along as well, as she was by far the brightest star in Karen's later years of life. They will all miss dearly the woman who always told you she loved you, and how special you were to her. In memory of Karen, her three children plan to get matching tattoos - which would get a good laugh from their mom.

Karen is survived by her parents, Jack and Phyllis Newton; sister, Cheryl Huff; husband, John; son, John; daughters, Erin Englehart and Megan Blaylock; and granddaughter, Montana Reid.
