Claude Theodore "Ted" Riggs, 84, of Phoenix, Ore., passed away on Jan. 22, 2009 at Providence Medical Center in Medford, Ore. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Talent United Methodist Church. Rev. Bill Hare will officiate, with a potluck following the service.
Ted was born on April 12, 1924, in Wendling, Ore. On August 11, 1963, he married his wife Jacqueline, who survives. Ted served in the U.S. Navy as a 1st Class Boiler Maker. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, and served on many ships in the Pacific. After the war, he worked many jobs including timber faller, diesel mechanic, merchant marine, and most recently general maintenance for Bear Creek. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Association and the Talent United Methodist Church. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and most importantly, sharing his World War II experiences.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; his son, Dennis Riggs (Diane); his daughter, Luana Hertig (Maynard); stepchildren, Jody Whitsett (Susan), Jeff Whitsett (Jeanne), and Janis Whitsett-Watts (Chuck); 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
