The Medford Ski/Snowboard Education Foundation freestyle team started the year with high hopes. With the lack of snow on Mount Ashland this year, however, their hopes were turning sour.

Until last weekend, that is, when they hit the road for the first-year team's first-ever competition, the Oregon Cup Free Style event at Mount Bachelor. During Sunday's open Rail Jam, skiers had a two-hour window to make four runs, going for their best tricks on tabletops and box rails.

In a field with more than 100 entrants, Jessica Volk of Phoenix, in her first freestyle competition, won the girls amateur division with big air and smooth slides on the rails. North Medford High School's Jared Broadwater won the men's division with a combination of amplitude and style off the tabletops and rails.

"I felt better on the rails" said Broadwater.

Six other teammates placed in the top 20: Reese Pressman, 4th; Jake Johnson, 7th; Ian Flockoi, 13th; Austin Morgan, 15th; Will Hilton, 18th; and Jackson Batzer, 19th.
