MYRTLE POINT — Injured or not, the Rogue River boys basketball team needed Jackson Mitchell in double overtime on Friday.

Mitchell, who had sat on the bench for the first three quarters, shook off the pain of his swollen knee to score 16 points in the fourth period and two extra frames to help the Chieftains survive for a 68-67 victory over host Myrtle Point.

"It was a physical, physical game," said Rogue River assistant coach Jeff Caulley. "His knees were flaring up, but in that fourth quarter, we had to have him in there. It was a dogfight and we had to have a really physical guy in there."

Despite pain in his knee, Mitchell continued to attack the basket. He nearly hit the game-winner as time expired in regulation, but his layup in traffic was off the mark.

That relentlessness would pay off in the end, however, as Mitchell made a move in the lane and was fouled on his way to the hoop with 8.8 seconds left in the second overtime. He made the second of two free throws and the Chieftains used strong man-to-man defense to thwart the Bobcats' last-gasp 3-point attempt.

In order to reach the second extra session, the Chieftains (13-6, 7-2 Sunset League) called upon Dustin Krouse.

Earlier this season, Krouse's buzzer-beating 3-pointer sent the Chieftains into overtime against Bandon and the result was a key victory for Rogue River.

With six seconds remaining on Friday, Chieftains coach Scott Anderson ran a designed play for a Krouse 3-pointer once again. Krouse's conversion capped Rogue River's four-point rally in the first OT.

"With 3s, he's kinda the money man right now," said Caulley.

Also for the Chieftains, Darren Taylor scored 15 points, Chrystian Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds and Craig Lee provided 12 rebounds and five steals.
