NEWPORT — Phoenix's top three girl swimmers accomplished season bests in an eight-team meet Friday despite competing for a second successive day.

NEWPORT — Phoenix's top three girl swimmers accomplished season bests in an eight-team meet Friday despite competing for a second successive day.

The meet was rescheduled from one postponed because of weather in December.

"We just came off a meet at North Bend yesterday," said Pirates coach Jim Heath. "I'm proud of that. Those are good times. They're notable."

The Phoenix girls placed second by four points to district powerhouse North Bend, 286 to 282.

Kayla Heath of the Pirates won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.87 and the 100 backstroke in 1:04.98. The latter was the first time she's been under 1:05 in the event since last year's state meet.

Nicole Knutson was second in the 100 free in 1:05.75, and Tessa Lockett was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:16.58.

In the boys meet, Phoenix placed fifth with 151.5 points. Winner Central scored 358.

CHURCHILL 3, ASHLAND 2, OT — At Eugene, Ashland suffered its first loss in Southern Oregon League play when Bryan Ross scored only 10 seconds into sudden-death overtime at the Lane County Fairgrounds.

Casey Skolnik scored both goals for the Grizzlies, one in the second period and one in the third. The first was assisted by Sam Taylor, the second by Trevor Perry.

Churchill had goals in the same periods by Connor Tyman and Riley Kulm.

Ashland goalie Gabe Dean had 22 saves against 25 shots. Churchill goalie Jessie D'Agosta had 31 saves against 33 shots.

The teams play again at 7:15 this morning.
