GLIDE — With starting forward Amanda Kinney out with an illness, Cascade Christian needed someone else to step up on a neutral court in a Sunset League girls basketball tiebreaker Wednesday.

Megan Hallmark rose to the occasion as the Challengers defeated Bandon, 55-33, at Glide High School to secure the No. 3 spot in the league playoffs.

The Challengers will play at conference runner-up Gold Beach at 7 p.m. Friday. If Cascade defeats Gold Beach, the Challengers will play Sunset champion Myrtle Point on Monday and will secure no worse than the league's No. 2 seed in the Class 3A state playoffs. A loss against Gold Beach will give Cascade a home game on Monday against the winner of the Rogue River-Bandon game Friday.

Cascade Christian held a slim 8-6 lead over the Tigers after the first quarter. Then Hallmark, a junior forward, came off the bench to spark a 10-0 run in the second quarter. Hallmark had two 3-pointers and eight points in the period as the Challengers took command by outscoring Bandon 16-6.

Hallmark finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

"(Hallmark) really got us going," said Cascade Christian coach Marvin Denman. "She was everywhere. We needed her energy tonight."

Junior post Andi Vondra led the Challengers with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Challengers had 39 rebounds against the taller Tigers.

"Tonight we were hungry for rebounds and that made our offense go," said Denman. "We really concentrated on rebounding strong."

Lindsey Blodgett turned in a steady all-around performance for the Challengers. The senior point guard scored seven points, had seven assists and six rebounds.

"We don't have one big scorer," said Denman. "Every night a different kid steps up. That's what is so special about this team."

And Hallmark was that special player against Bandon.
