Evelyn W. Spencer

Evelyn W. Spencer passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at age 92. She was born July 26, 1916, on the Horseshoe Ranch in Pontotoc County, Okla., and spent her childhood growing up on the ranch. In 1938 she married Robert Francis Watson, of Colorado Springs, Colo., who preceded her in death in 1967. In 1938 they moved to California where he was a ranch foreman on ranches in Cuyama, Merced, and Salinas before moving in 1959 to their own ranch in Rogue River, Ore. Evelyn was an elementary school teacher for much of her adult life. She taught in the Evans Valley, Josephine County, and Grants Pass school districts until her retirement in 1972. In 1974 she married Norman Lyman Spencer of Jacksonville, Ore., and lived in Grants Pass until after his death in 1992. While living in Grants Pass, she was an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the Grants Pass Golf Club. She enjoyed traveling, her investment club, bridge and mahjong groups. Evelyn moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in 1993. There she continued to enjoy travel, golf, mahjong and her many friends. She was an avid reader, loved her family, nature and maintaining her bonsai trees.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Watson; and a son and daughter-in-law, John and Pat Watson, all of Portland; two granddaughters, Carrie Yakola, of York, Maine, Kimberly Watson of Palm Desert, Calif.; one grandson, Rian Watson, of Portland; one great-granddaughter Lucy Yakola, of York , Maine; and her brother, Albert Clary, of Sulphur, Okla.

A celebration of Evelyn's life for family and friends will be held later at a time to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choosing.
