Graham J.D. (Ray) Balfour

Aug. 12, 1937-Feb.16, 2009

Graham John David (Ray) Balfour died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at his home. He was 71.

Mr. Balfour was born August 12, 1937, in London, England and emigrated with his parents to the U.S. in 1948, settling in Boston, Mass. Two years later, Mr. Balfour and his parents moved to Argentina, where they lived for four years, until his mother's two cattle ranches, that had been in her family since the early 1900s, could be sold.

In 1954, the Balfour family moved back to the U.S. where Ray attended a private school in New Hampshire. Mr. Balfour graduated from Dublin School in Dublin, N.H., in 1956, and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 1960, with a degree in romance languages and a minor in music history.

Always a stickler for correct English language usage, Mr. Balfour was a teacher and administrator at private schools in Arizona and Connecticut from 1961 to 1975. He worked in private business in Arizona for about 10 years, then moved to Medford, Ore., in 1986 where he worked for Bear Creek Corporation until he retired in January 2006.

Mr. Balfour has no known relatives. No memorial services are planned.
