The Eagle Point School District has canceled school March 19 and 20 to help make up losses in state funding.

"These are unchartered waters for us," said Eagle Point schools Superintendent Cynda Rickert. "Our district has chosen to be hopeful, but we have developed a plan for cutting days so we are not just waiting."

The cancellations extend spring break by two days. The break is now scheduled for March 19 to 27.

The district of more than 4,000 students says it could have to slash up to another 10 days but will wait to confirm any subsequent cuts until the state Legislature decides whether to appropriate federal stimulus funds or state reserve funds to schools.

The Legislature is expected to have state budget proposals on Gov. Ted Kulongoski's desk by Monday.
