PORTLAND — North Medford wrestling coach Nolan Harris hinted that his team may have been intimidated at the state tournament last year.
He didn't sense that this season, but the results remained frustratingly familiar for the second-year Black Tornado coach on the opening day of the Class 6A state tournament at the Memorial Coliseum.
North Medford, after an encouraging showing at the Southwest Conference district tournament, saw just one of its five district champions advance in Thursday's first round and only three of its 11 total wrestlers.
"I felt that we wrestled a little bit not to lose in some of those matches we lost," Harris said. "We've got to go out there to win. We've got to rise to the occasion if we are going to accomplish what we want to accomplish."
Junior 145-pounder Ryan Mahoney was North Medford's only district champion to avoid a first-round defeat. He beat fourth-seeded Spencer Kaufman of North Salem in overtime 10-8. The Black Tornado's Chris McFall (103) and Ammon Ebert (135) also reached today's quarterfinal round.
Others weren't so fortunate.
Cory Haggans (152), Mark Dickison (171), Kody Bonham (189) and Robert Ross (285) — all SWC title winners — lost on Day 1. Third-seeded Kade Peden, North Medford's lone returning state-placer, also dropped his first match of the day at 160.
"I don't know that they were totally intimidated by the atmosphere," Harris said. "Maybe they were a little apprehensive about where we sat in the bracket. We just lost close matches that we need to win at this level to have success. I don't know what it was."
The Black Tornado earned a modicum of revenge in the consolation rounds with Haggans, Bonham and Ross surviving to Day 2.
South Medford senior Ken Hyland reached the quarterfinals with a dominating win in the 160-pound bracket. The Panthers' only state qualifier pinned Newberg's Aaron Boggs in 1:29.
North Medford sits in eighth place with 33.5 team points. Newberg is in first with 62.
Two-time defending champion Roseburg suffered a blow to its title hopes when defending state champion Seth Thomas didn't make weight by four-tenths of a pound. The Indians stand fourth with 54 points.
Grants Pass, which sent three to the quarterfinals, is tied for 17th with 20.5 points.
Many of the other Rogue Valley teams opened the tournament with few surprises.
Southern Sky Conference foes Eagle Point and Crater each advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals. The Comets' Skyler Prislac (112), Jeremy Artoff (112), Nick Ferris (125), Brysen Winner (135), Brock Gutches (152), Kenny Fahndrich (160), Logan Brooks (189), Darrio Mobley (215) and Brandon Hesse (285) advanced.
Gutches, a defending state champion, and Fahndrich are the top seeds in their respective weight classes. Gutches looked the part as he pinned Hunter Woods in 1:03 while Fahndrich escaped with an 11-10 victory.
"We took a couple hits, but it's about what we expected," said Crater coach Denny Walters, who is leading the Comets in their first state tournament since the suspension of longtime coach Greg Haga. "There is a lot of wrestling left. I'm not exactly where I want to be, but that's wrestling. Right now is where the heart comes in. They've worked extremely hard and have gone through a lot with our program, obviously, this year. Now is the time to step up."
Artoff's win, a 12-2 major decision, came against sixth-seeded Amy Bloom of Lebanon.
Eagle Point sent Aaron Lorenz (103), Ben Zomerdyk (119), Daniel Soto (119), Trent Kaiser (130), Chris Wilson (140), Josh Winter (145), Garrett Davis (152), Gage Baumer (160) and Steven Josephson (171) into the quarterfinals.
Davis pinned second-seeded Kurry King of Glencoe, a third-place finisher at state last season, in 1:52.
"In my mind, that's not an upset," Eagle Point coach Kacey McNulty said of Davis' win. "But Garrett's kind of unknown, and he matched up with a seeded kid right off the bat because he was second in his district. Second behind Brock Gutches is not a bad thing."
The Eagles have just one wrestler remaining in the consolation bracket with 140-pounder Jake Gallo advancing. Crater has four wrestlers looking to place in the consolation bracket — Truman Winningham (103), Mike Macuk (119), Chance Fahndrich (145) and Jeremy Swing (160).
Crater sits in third place with 41 team points while Eagle Point is fourth with 38.5. First-place Hermiston has 76 points.
Ashland sent one wrestler to the quarterfinals (145-pounder Jake Scarminach) and has one still battling in the consolation bracket (171-pounder Issa Shahin). The Grizzlies are tied for 25th with nine points.
All three of Phoenix's Skyline Conference champions advanced to the quarterfinals in fourth-seeded Ryan Tourville (135), third-seeded Josh Warden (152) and Alex Machado (189). Freshman Eleazar Deluca (140) and Emmet Hettum (160) also were winners in the first round.
Deluca, ranked No. 2 in the state most of the year behind Illinois Valley's Sam Winter, won a 5-2 decision over second-seeded Brock Crocker of Sweet Home. Crocker, a junior, finished fourth at state last season.
"It wasn't as pretty as it could have been, but he got the job done," said Phoenix coach John Farmer, who's had high praise for his freshman all season.
Tourville faces Illinois Valley's Quayde Fisher today in the quarterfinals. Tourville defeated Fisher 10-6 last week for the Skyline Conference title.
Phoenix sits in 13th place with 31 points. Sweet Home is first with 56.
Illinois Valley, which advanced seven in the championship bracket, is 10th with 37 points.
Quarterfinal matches begin today at 9 a.m.
