The No. 14-ranked Coyotes improved to 29-3 overall and meet Concordia for the championship Monday. Both teams get automatic bids to the national tournament.

SOU, ranked 22nd, is 25-6 and awaits the final Top-25 poll Wednesday. If they are ranked high enough, they'll get one of 11 at-large bids.

That the game got to overtime was stunning. The Raiders took an 80-77 with four seconds left in regulation on two Whitney Scott free throws, but Nicole Gall's desperation 3-pointer as time ran out forced overtime.

College of Idaho's Christon Vander Esch tallied a school-record 39 points and 19 rebounds, while SOU's Jacki Speer achieved a career-high 35 points and 17 rebounds, her 22nd double-double of the season.

Softball

SOU SPLITS — The Southern Oregon softball team split a pair of games Friday in its own invitational tournament at U.S. Cellular Park in Medford.

The Raiders (2-4) defeated Puget Sound 8-0 in the opener and then fell to Azusa Pacific 13-5 in the second game.

Play resumes today with six games, starting at 10 a.m. Azusa and SOU meet at noon.

On Sunday, the Raiders host Simpson University at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Medford facility.

In the win over Puget Sound, freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz allowed only two hits and struck out six. Both hits were in the fifth and final inning. The game ended on the eight-run mercy rule.

Kurtz, a Washington all-state product, got the Raiders going in the opener with a two-run triple for a 3-0 lead.

Justine Fulton was 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Raiders. Strohm Fouty had two hits.

Against Azusa, the defense let the Raiders down. SOU committed five errors, including four in a three-inning stretch in which Azusa scored all its runs — only one of which was earned.

Kurtz hit an RBI double to give SOU a 1-0 lead in the first.

Azusa took control with a seven-run fourth on only three hits.
