Dorothy Christine Andersen of Ashland, Ore., died while in hospice care on Thursday, March 12, 2009, in Jacksonville. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1926, she graduated from the University of Omaha. She then worked two jobs until her mid 30's in order to attain financial independence so she could write and work for her favorite social causes, advancing women's rights and supporting battered women and children.
Moving to Bend, Ore., she actively advocated before the Oregon legislature, collecting clothing and food for the needy and helping establish shelters for the homeless. Later she moved to Ashland to enjoy the Shakespeare Theatre and to continue her advocacy efforts.
Ms. Andersen is survived by four sisters, Ruth Hover in Ohio, Edna Klima in Georgia, Margaret Ziehm in Colorado and Joan White in Massachusetts; and a brother Jens Andersen in Nebraska.
Contributions may be made to the Dunn House/Community Works.
