But he's here to help this time: Representatives of the Internal Revenue Service are throwing open the doors this morning to help people prepare tax returns.

The Medford office of the IRS, 960 Ellendale Drive, will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and representatives will help prepare returns for people with income of less than $42,000 in 2008.

The event is especially for people who have suffered a financial hardship, and individuals and families with low to moderate income who may be eligible for the earned income tax credit. The credit is often overlooked, and it can provide a refund of up to $4,800, IRS sources say.

IRS staff will also be available to help taxpayers resolve tax issues; answer tax law questions; make account adjustments; accept tax payments; establish payment agreements for those who cannot pay their taxes in full; and provide tax forms, as well as information about electronic filing.
