MEDFORD — Police arrested a pair of suspected burglars at gunpoint Wednesday during a traffic stop on South Oakdale Avenue, officials said.

At around 3:45 p.m. a Medford officer pulled over a maroon Chevrolet sports-utility vehicle linked to a Curry County jewelry store robbery.

The officer discovered the driver and passenger had felony warrants for their arrests and called for additional officers to help take the pair into custody.

"We don't like going into the unknown during felony stops," Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said. "It's always good to have back-up when dealing with people who have warrants."

Several patrol cars converged on the area, causing a crowd to develop around the scene.

The officers, guns drawn, ordered the driver and passenger out of the SUV. They were taken into custody without incident.

The driver was identified as 42-year-old Robert Thomas Hider, who is wanted on a warrant charging him with first-degree aggravated theft. The passenger was 44-year-old Lisa Diane Montel, who is wanted on warrants charging her with first-degree aggravated theft, second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief, according to court records.

Medford police spent Wednesday afternoon questioning the pair and intended to lodge them in the Jackson County Jail later Wednesday evening.

"We don't have any charges against them yet, but we could if we find something illegal inside the vehicle," Budreau said.

The incident closed South Oakdale Avenue to traffic for about 10 minutes.
