EUGENE — John Wallace singled in two runs in the fourth inning and Oregon State went on to defeat Oregon 7-1 Friday as the two teams resumed their Civil War rivalry that was suspended 28 years ago when the Ducks dropped their baseball program.

Tyler Waldron (2-1) allowed one run on five hits over 71/3 innings for the win. Kraig Sitton earned the save for the Beavers (14-5), who have won six straight.

Tyler Anderson allowed three runs on six hits over 61/3 innings in the loss for the Ducks (10-13), who were without coach George Horton because of a three-game suspension.

Horton was serving the last game of the suspension for contact with an umpire during last Sunday's 5-1 loss Washington. He was ejected from the game after disputing a call in the fifth inning, and the umpire's report said that Horton's cap touched him during the dispute.

Friday's Civil War game was played before a sellout crowd of 2,777 at Oregon's new P.K. Park. The Ducks kept it close until the ninth inning, when the Beavers scored four runs.

"The people in the state of Oregon are passionate about baseball and all sports," Oregon assistant coach Mike Kirby said. "They came out today in full force and it was great to see and hear."

Oregon brought back baseball this season for the first time since 1981, when it was relegated to a club sport because of budget constraints.

Horton came to the Ducks after coaching at Cal State Fullerton for 11 seasons, taking the Titans to the College World Series six times. His team won the national title in 2004, and he was twice the national coach of the year.

The Ducks made it to the College World Series in 1954, but were eliminated after losses to Arizona and Massachusetts.

Oregon State leads the all-time series 151-144. The Beavers were Oregon's last baseball opponent in 1981 when the program was dropped.

Oregon State won national titles in 2006 and 2007.

It was the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams. The three-game series continues today and Sunday at Portland's PGE Park.
