ANDERSON, Calif. — South Medford freshman Samantha Owirka was a force at the plate Friday, helping lead the Panthers to their first win of the season in the 24-team Cubs Classic softball tournament.

Owirka was 6-for-7 in three games Friday, joining Ashleigh Hawkins in going 2-for-2 with one RBI in South Medford's 7-4 win over Central Valley.

Sophomore Celia Evans picked up the pitching victory in that game, striking out five and allowing five hits and two walks in six innings for the Panthers (1-3).

Earlier in the day, Owirka had two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 5-4 loss to Enterprise of California. Hawkins was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

In the Panthers' third game of the day, Owirka was 2-for-3 and singled home Jordan Jones for South Medford's lone run in a 2-1, seven-inning loss to Del Oro of Sacramento, Calif.

Jones was 2-for-3 against Del Oro, while Dominique Newman took her second one-run loss of the day despite four strikeouts and no walks. Newman had five strikeouts and three walks in the six-inning Enterprise contest.

SUTHERLIN 8-9, NORTH VALLEY 1-2 — At Sutherlin, North Valley senior Rachel Conard had three hits for North Valley in the doubleheader loss.

Conard had two hits, including a first-inning solo home run, in the opener. Then singled and accounted for one of the North Valley's two runs in the nightcap.

In Game 1, the Knights (1-5) did themselves in by giving up six unearned runs in the second inning.

Shelby Brummett scored North Valley's first run in the second game. Brummett got hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Alex Farmer and scored on a double steal.

Baseball

NORTH MEDFORD 10, CHURCHILL 5 — Brady Shipley pitched 42/3 innings without allowing an earned run and had two hits and two RBIs as North Medford improved to 6-1 on the season.

Shipley retired the first two batters in the fifth, then the Black Tornado opened the door for Churchill with an error. The Lancers followed with three straight hits and scored three runs.

Shipley struck out seven, walked three and allowed three hits.

Chris Bradshaw got the final out in the fifth and finished the game on the mound. Bradshaw also went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI and Cody James added two hits and an RBI for the Black Tornado.

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 9, ROGUE RIVER 8 — At Brookings, Rogue River had a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning but Brookings scored five runs in the bottom half to take the lead.

In the seventh, the Chieftains (1-4) received four straight walks to pull to within 9-7. Rogue River scored once more on a wild pitch but stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Christian Reyes had two hits and one RBI for Rogue River.
