Southern Oregon University has received a $25,000 gift from the estate of the late Beverly "Bev" Bennett for women's athletic scholarships.

Southern Oregon University has received a $25,000 gift from the estate of the late Beverly "Bev" Bennett for women's athletic scholarships.

Bennett taught and coached at Southern Oregon College from 1950 to 1984. She started the school's competitive sports program for women in the late 1950s and coached tennis, basketball, field hockey, volleyball and track. She was instrumental in organizing women's college leagues in the Northwest, and she also was a nationally rated basketball and volleyball official. She was one of two women included in the initial 12 inductees into the Southern Oregon State College Athletic Hall of Fame. She died Oct. 31 at the age of 82.

Bennett was a member of the Ashland City Council from 1984 to 1987. She then moved from Ashland to the Rogue Valley Manor, where she served as president of the Resident's Council and chairwoman of the Health Center Service and Health Services Advisory Committee.
