Karen Elaine Gegner



Karen was born March 2, 1952, in Medford, Ore., to Herman L. Gegner and Delores E. Gegner (King), who preceded her in death. Karen passed away on April 13, 2009 at Hinsdale Hospital in Illinois after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, John A. Shuler, of Oak Park, Ill.; her sisters, Lindy Justice, of Visalia, Calif. and Tamara David, of Puyallup, Wash.; and nephews, Aaron Drake, of Medford, Ore. and Jeremy Drake, of Tigard, Ore.

Karen graduated from Medford High School in 1970 and she moved to Eugene, Ore., where she enrolled at the University of Oregon and graduated in 1976. In 1987, she met and married John A. Shuler in Eugene. They moved to Hamilton, N.Y. in 1988, where she received her Masters in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University. They moved to Oak Park, Ill., where she lived for the last 16 years. Karen enjoyed several successful careers as a medical librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University. In 1997, she joined a software development firm as a senior project manager. She also worked as the Text Manager at the Stepan Bookstore of Dominican University.

Karen loved gardening, cooking for friends and family, photography and travel around the world.

There will be a celebration of Karen's life at St. Jude Catholic Church in Eugene, Ore., Friday May 1, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in her name to: Mercy Housing which organizes local efforts throughout the country to support affordable housing and supportive services. www.mercyhousing.org or the Chicago Botanic Garden www.chicagobotanic.org
